Château du Malle
Château de Malle was owned by the Lur Saluces family (previous owners of d`Yquem) from 1702 through to 1950. It was Jacques de Malle who had this magnificent Château built at the dawn of the 17th century.
Château de Malle is now owned by the Comtesse de Bournazel, who took up the reins after the death of her husband in 1985. Count Pierre de Bournazel, over the years, became a well-known figure on the Bordeaux viticultural scene (founding the Commanderie de Sauternes et Barsac in 1959).
This large 2ème Cru Classé estate is in the heart of the Sauternes area, covering 200 hectares of land. Château de Malle's wine is typically a blend of 75% Sémillon and 25% Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes are hand-harvested in several "tries" and are then fermented, with the wine then being matured in small oak casks (33% new) for 30 months.
Today, it is a listed historical monument, remarkable for its Mansart tiled rooves and well worth a visit to see its delightful Florentine gardens laid out on terraces.
The vineyard of 27 hectares of Sauternes and 23 hectares of Graves lies in a single stretch around the Château. It is planted on a well-orientated plateau, slightly hilly, with subsoils of silica, sand and clay-gravel.
Château de Malle is a Sauternes Grand Cru Classé with characteristic aromas of honey, almonds and candied apricot and good ageing capacity.
