Château Cazal Viel

Winemaker Laurent Miquel, who is based in the Saint Chinian appellation, where his family has been making wine since 1789, is creating a stir in the south of France.

While Laurent comes from a long tradition of winemakers, he is an outstanding example of how a new generation of winemakers is affecting the wine industry in France.

The domaine concentrates on achieving balance in their wines through growing perfectly ripe fruit that maintains higher acidity levels.

The Languedoc has a Mediterranean climate and some of the wines from here can be a little rough around the edges and overripe or over extracted.

His objective has been to show that the area can also produce elegant wines from its terroir and that if hard work is put in the vines and adapt our to strict planting, the wines can show good acidity and balance.

A famous Château owner in Bordeaux apparently once scathingly told Laurent that wines from the Languedoc would never have the ‘finesse’ of his wines. That was like a red flag waved before a bull and for the last decade he has been striving to prove him wrong!

Bordeaux' noble grape varieties produce wines of particular identity. Laurent has created a new identity of fine wines in the Languedoc.
