Wines from the Pernand-Vergelesses region
Nestled between two coombs, Pernand-Vergelesses is situated to the north of the Cote de Beaune.
Not mentioning the Grand Crus appellations the village of Pernand-Vergelesses is home to the only Village appellation in the sector which has a significant place amongst white wines: 52 hectares out of 145 are planted with Chardonnay. This appellation also includes 11 "Climats" ranked as Premier Crus, some of which are dedicated solely to white wines (Sous Fretille, Clos Berthet, etc.)
It results in white wines with floral aromas (hawthorn, acacia) and which, over time, give way to amber, honey and spices. On the palate, these wines have mineral overtones, they are harmonius and very pleasant. For the white wines, the Pernand-Vergelesses is well-matched with Sushi - it brings out their flavour whilst respecting their crisp but soft texture. It is also at home with freshwater fish served in a white sauce or seafood pasta or risotto. It can also be served with cheese - particularly blue cheese, goat's cheese and gruyere.
The red Pernand-Vergelesses wines are ruby in colour with hints of purple. The nose opens onto strawberry, raspberry and violet. With age, it moves to notes of undergrowth. The palate is accommodating and is solidly built. Fleshy and full bodied, its richness provides it with all the necessary harmony. With its virile tannins, it is clearly suited to fairly strong flavours such as veal - roast, braised or in a sauce, leg of lamb, wildfowl and grilled pork. A roast beef would also be an excellent match. Around 800,000 bottles are produced each year, of which 43% is Premier Cru.
The appellation produces almost as much white wine (46%) as red wine (54%)and does so only from traditional Burgundy grape varieties (Chardonnay & Pinot Noir).
Some 80 estates sell the AOC, although the top ten account for 50% of marketed volume. 40% of the appellation is sold by Burgundy wine merchants.
