Sémillon
In Sauternes, Barsac and Monbazillac, this is the grape that is susceptible to botrytis or “noble rot”. Some experts say its aroma is reminiscent of lanolin, but as pure lanolin is virtually odourless, the comparison hardly conveys the Sémillon’s distinctive bouquet. Melon, honey and dried fruits are more helpful which aromas are linked to the sweetness of the wines. They are perhaps a required taste but make a great accompaniment to a desert of better still cheese. The wines from Château d’Yquem are particularly sort after and age extremely well, demanding a high price. The wines from Monbazillac offer a fantastic, great value alternative.
