Mourvèdre
This excellent-quailty grape variety has been used more than other lesser varieties in Châteauneuf-du-Pape blends in recent years. It is grown extensively throughout the Rhône and the French Midi, and under the name Mataro, in Spain. It is Australia's fifth widest-cultivated black grape, but is a declining force in southern California. It was once the most popular grape in Provence, but is now much less common there with one exception is Bandol, Provence, where Mourvèdre has found a natural home, producing powerful red wines in the style of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Pronounced: Moor-VEH-druh
