Gewürztraminer
At its most clear-cut, Gewürztraminer is most varietally distinctive in Alsace. The variety produces very aromatic wines, which are often described as spicy and exotic. Orignally from the Pfalz region in Germany, the Gewürztraminer was introduced into Alsace after 1871, since when it has been successfully transplanted as far afield as South Africa and California, where the characteristics tend to be softer and less powerful.
