Gamay
The mass-produced basic product of this famous grape from Beaujolias has a tell-tale “pear-drop” aroma, indicative of its mace ration carbonique style of vinification. Most of the wines produced here are in the Beaujolais Nouveau style – wine that should be drunk young. However traditionally vinified wines from Beaujolias’ nine classic crus can be aged, like other red wines and, after 10 – 15 years, will develop Pinot Noir varietal traits and flavours – this in part because the grape is an ancient, natural clone of Pinot Noir. Look for Brouilly, Saint-Amour & Fleuie, amongst others – unusual but pleasant, delicate and easy-drinking wines which go great with food!
